What is Laugh Be a Lady?
Laugh Be a Lady is a comedy fundraiser showcasing some of Philadelphia’s most talented female comedians, improvisers, and sketch writers/performers. All proceeds from the event will benefit Women Against Abuse (link: http://www.womenagainstabuse.org).
When and where is the show?
The show will take place on Friday, July 7th at 7:30 PM at the Playground at the Adrienne, 2030 Sansom St., Philadelphia, PA.
Why did you choose Women Against Abuse?
When choosing a charity for this event, Women Against Abuse was the natural choice. Not only does the organization advocate for and provide financial, physical, educational, and emotional support as well as other resources for women who are victims of domestic violence, they also fight for advocacy and education while maintaining the victim’s safety, sovereignty, and dignity.
According to the website for the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV):
On a typical day, domestic violence hotlines receive approximately 21,000 calls, an average of close to 15 calls every minute.
Intimate partner violence accounts for 15% of all violent crime.
The presence of a gun in the home during a domestic violence incident increases the risk of homicide by at least 500%.
72% of all murder-suicides involved an intimate partner; 94% of the victims of these crimes are female. (qtd. in ncadv.org)
Violence against women can be stopped by organizations like Women Against Abuse, and a night of comedy in support of this cause seeks to educate the public about organizations like these and the fantastic work they do to support women in their communities.
What can the audience expect from this show?
Please expect a three-hour showcase of female talent with a lot of heart. We will feature some of Philadelphia’s best, including stand-up comedians, improvisers and sketch writers/performers including: improv from Clamor of Harpies, Hotline, Rage Friends, Aretha’s Hat, and Wisdom Teeth; sketches from Mani Pedi, The 19th, Cups and a Half, and Kathryn and Sarah; and stand up from Cecily Chapman, Alyssa Al-Dookhi, and Sarah Bell.
What is your goal for the show?
We hope to sell out! The more money we can raise for Women Against Abuse, the better, so we are hoping to fill the theater with generous patrons who love to laugh and to support great causes. We also want everyone to spread the word about Women Against Abuse. Though we aim to give a sizable donation to Women Against Abuse from our proceeds, we also want our audience to be lifelong supporters of the organization and the excellent work they are doing in our city. Lastly, we want everyone to have a great time!
What are some of the raffle prizes for the show?
We have collected some amazing prizes for this show, with donations coming from Feminist Apparel, The Butcher Bar, Wawa, and more! Have those bills ready!
How can people purchase tickets?
Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance at Brown Paper Tickets or in person with cash only.
